Mavala Stop

I took the kids to the dentist a weeks ago or so. We, of course, discussed Jordan's thumb sucking. There will be serious dental problems if she doesn't stop-especially since her front two permanent teeth are in. The dentist told me about some stuff called "Mavala Stop" that she said some patients have told her is like magic. It old Darin about it, so he found some on ebay. The lady said she only used it twice, and didn't need it anymore, so it was pretty cheap.

Landon also sucks his first finger-which the dentist also said will be a problem in the future. I can look at his teeth and tell that it is affecting him as well. So tonight we decided to put it on both of them tonight. Jordan happily let Darin put it on, thinking it was fingernail polish-that's what it looks like-fingernail polish. Landon was half asleep when Darin did his fingers. He didn't know what was going on.

OH MAN....we did not know what we were getting ourselves into!! When we were putting the kids to bed, Landon realized what was happening. He had been asleep on the couch, so he was half asleep when we went up to bed. He suddenly started to say "my mouth is yucky, my mouth is yucky." I told him not ot suck his finger. He did not get it. He was getting much worse-crying and screaming that "my mouth is yucky."

I began to feel soooo bad. I felt sorry for him. I licked his finger to see how it tastes and it was sooooo bad. Then it made me feel worse. Darin calls me a wimp. Landon proceeded to cry for an hour, at least.

Then it hit Jordan. She kept coming down telling us that she didn't suck her thumb, but it still tasted bad. She would put her fingers up to her mouth. I told her not to even put her hand up to her mouth. She had a really hard time falling asleep as well. Ugh.

I don't know if I can take this. Now I feel so bad-are we taking away Lanny's one thing to help soothe him? Will either one of them be traumatized? Will they be ok?

Darin said he will be traumatized by the orthodontic bill if they both don't stop. I just wish there was an easier way. I don't like to see them suffer, but I guess it probably won't be the worse thing they'll ever deal with!

It'll be just like getting rid of the pacifier. Maybe take a couple of days that may be difficult but then it's done. You can do it Wendi!

Awww, poor kiddos and you! Darin's comment about being traumatized by the orthodontic bill cracked me up! My brother had to use something like that for his daughter (age 5) and it did work - only took a few days I think. Good luck!

I feel your pain, Wendi! We just we through a similar thing when we got rid of Scarlett's beloved binky. The first week or so was really rough, but we held firm. It was sooo hard to hear her so upset, but now that the binky is long gone, we know it was worth it!

I remember finding Quinn "hiding" in different places around the house with his blankie over his head sucking his fingers. we used to tape his fingers to get him to stop sucking. And look now! He is 12 with perfect teeth. Hang in there...

Traumatized by the orthodontic bill...that got a chuckle.

They definitely won't be traumatized. You know, I sucked my fingers until the ridiculous (very ridiculous) age of 8. How did my mom get me to finally stop? If I stopped sucking my fingers for 2 months, I could get my ears pierced. Voila. Granted, not what you'd want to try with Landon...or maybe not even Jordan. But, the reward thing worked for me. Good luck!
